What Is the History of Roxboro, North Carolina?

The history of Roxboro dates back to the late 18th century. The earliest settlers established the area in 1793. Back then, the community called the area "Mocassin Gap." However, residents later adopted the name "Roxboro" after a town called Roxburgh in Scotland. That name came long after the postal service reached the area. The first post office opened in 1795. In 1806, the United States Post Office changed the town's name to "Roxborough" before settling on its final name of "Roxboro" in 1892. Incorporation occurred in 1855, creating the first and only municipality in Person County. Person Country experienced significant growth throughout its history, experiencing a booming economy due to tobacco, cotton, and corn farming. Later, a Person County businessman convinced railroads to invest in the region, leading to further growth. Today, Roxboro has a population of over 8,000 people. Many buildings from before the turn of the 20th century still stand today, making up the uptown historic district.
