What Is the History of South Boston, Virginia?

The town we call South Boston today started as "Boyd's Ferry." In 1796, the Virginia General Assembly authorized commissioners to establish a settlement on the south side of the Dan River. However, after intense flooding, the residents relocated to the north side of the Dan River and renamed the community "South Boston." Several decades later, the Richmond and Danville railroad passed through the area, allowing South Boston to grow as an important market for brightleaf tobacco, the second largest in the United States. The area experienced substantial growth and became known for its tobacco warehouses and factories.

By 1960, South Boston became an independent city by court order. However, South Boston made history in 1995 when it reverted to a town and rejoined Halifax County. The town's history with tobacco is something residents celebrated throughout its history. It used to host an annual National Tobacco Festival. Today, the festival is no more. However, the town's rich history is well-preserved and respected.
