Oxford's history goes back over 250 years. The area began as a plantation farm for local legislator Samuel Benton. The regional legislature then ordered the area around the plantation to become the seat of Granville County. Oxford grew modestly in the following years before becoming incorporated in 1816. The area's farms and plantations grew substantially, making Granville County a hotspot for agriculture. Tobacco was one of the area's most abundant crops, and it helped turn Oxford into a burgeoning town.
